2 Euro Commemorative Coin Finland 2007 50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome The commemorative coin refers to the signing of the Treaties of Rome at the Capitoline and stresses their role in founding the European Economic Community and the European Atomic Community, developments that ultimately helped bring about a shared currency. The design depicts the treaty document bearing the signatures of representatives from the six founding states — Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands — topped by a pattern drawn from Michelangelo’s pavement design for the Piazza del Campidoglio. The motif is identical across participating countries, while national names and inscriptions are adapted to each language. The design resulted from a competition among European mints; no single artist is clearly credited.
