2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2018 75th Anniversary of the death of Kostis Palamas The Greek €2 commemorative coin issued in 2018 marks the 75th anniversary of the death of the poet Kostis Palamas, who died in Athens on 27 February 1943. Born in Patras in 1859 and educated in Messolonghi and Athens, Palamas became a defining figure in the development of modern Greek literature. He was a leading voice of the movement for demotic Greek, challenging an artificial classical idiom and drawing literary inspiration from everyday speech, popular culture, history and national experience. Associated with the New Athenian School, he combined formal variety with cultural renewal. In addition to poetry, he wrote plays, short stories and influential literary criticism. His portrait thus commemorates a pivotal figure in modern Greece’s cultural history.
