2 Euro Commemorative Coin Luxembourg 2018 175th Anniversary of the death of Grand Duke William I This issue marks the 175th anniversary of the death of William I (Willem Frederik, Prince of Orange-Nassau), born in The Hague on 24 August 1772 and deceased in Berlin on 12 December 1843. In 1815 he became King of the Netherlands and, in the same year, Grand Duke of Luxembourg; his grand-ducal rule concluded with his abdication on 7 October 1840. The design places Grand Duke Henri on the right, facing left, and William I on the left. Between them run the vertical inscriptions “GUILLAUME Ier” and “1772–1843”. At the lower edge are the inscriptions “LUXEMBOURG” and “2018”. The design is by Herbert Wähner and features a lion and a winged caduceus as mint marks, plus twelve stars on the outer ring.
