2 Euro Commemorative Coin Belgium 2019 25th Anniversary of the European Monetary Institute The European Monetary Institute began work in Frankfurt in 1994 and prepared the way for Economic and Monetary Union. It coordinated cooperation among national central banks and developed technical foundations for the future shared currency. In 1998, it was succeeded by the European Central Bank. Belgium’s coin marking its 25th anniversary recalls this transitional period, when political agreements were turned into concrete institutions, procedures and rules for the euro.
