2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2019 100th Anniversary of the birth of Manolis Andronikos Greece’s 2019 2-euro commemorative coin marks the centenary of the birth of archaeologist Manolis Andronikos (1919–1992). As a professor at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, he became a leading figure in the study of ancient Macedonia. His defining achievement came near Vergina in November 1977, when excavations uncovered royal tombs containing exceptionally rich gold, silver, bronze and painted discoveries. One tomb is widely identified as that of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. The finds transformed Vergina into a major international archaeological reference point and illuminated the ceremonial culture of the Macedonian monarchy. The UNESCO-listed site of ancient Aigai preserves this legacy.
