2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2019 150th Anniversary of the death of Andreas Kalvos Issued in 2019, Greece’s commemorative 2-euro coin marks the 150th anniversary of the death of poet Andreas Kalvos (1792–1869). Born on Zakynthos, Kalvos moved to Livorno in 1802 and received a classical education in Italy. His association with the poet Ugo Foscolo profoundly shaped his literary taste and political ideals. Although he first wrote in Italian, he later developed a distinctive Greek poetry that joined neoclassical discipline with Romantic ideas of liberty. His collections Lyra, published in 1824, and Lyrika, issued in 1826, expressed the ideals of the Greek struggle for independence. After participating in European exile and philhellenic circles, Kalvos taught on Corfu before settling in England, where he died in 1869.
