2 Euro Commemorative Coin San Marino 2019 550th Anniversary of the death of Filippo Lippi This issue marks the 550th anniversary of Fra Filippo Lippi’s death in 1469 at Spoleto. A Florentine painter and Carmelite friar, Lippi was an important figure in the Italian Early Renaissance. His artistic influence extended beyond his lifetime and reached later painters, including Sandro Botticelli. The coin therefore commemorates both a distinguished historical figure and an artist whose work contributed to the evolution of Renaissance painting. The design focuses on the Madonna and Child, taken from Lippi’s painting “Madonna with Child and Two Angels.” The paired dates 1469 and 2019 set the artist’s year of death against the year of issue, clearly identifying the commemorative occasion. San Marino released the coin on 1 September 2019, linking the historic remembrance to a precise modern date.
