2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2007 50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome Italy’s 2007 €2 commemorative coin marks the 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome. On 25 March 1957, Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the Federal Republic of Germany signed two agreements in Rome: one established the European Economic Community, while the other created the European Atomic Energy Community, Euratom. The EEC Treaty laid the foundations for a common market and closer economic cooperation; both treaties entered into force on 1 January 1958. The coin depicts the treaty document signed by the six founding states, placed beneath the word “EUROPA”. Its background reproduces the paving designed by Michelangelo for Rome’s Capitoline Square, the site associated with the signing. Twelve stars around the edge identify the wider European context.
