2 Euro Commemorative Coin Slovenia 2019 100th Anniversary of the University of Ljubljana Slovenia 2-Euro Commemorative Coin 2019 Centenary of the Founding of the University of Ljubljana The University of Ljubljana opened on 3 December 1919, a few months after the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes had enacted a university law. Its establishment reflected the changed circumstances following the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy, which had made study at Austrian universities less accessible to Slovenian students. A university in Ljubljana therefore expanded opportunities for higher education in the Slovenian lands and provided a lasting institutional basis for scientific development. The commemorative coin marks this formative moment in the country’s educational and research history, rather than celebrating a later university milestone.
