2 Euro Commemorative Coin Estonia 2020 200th Anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica Estonia marks the bicentenary of Europe’s discovery of Antarctica by recalling an expedition that opened a new chapter in the study of the southern polar world. The commemorative design is closely linked to Fabian Gottlieb Benjamin von Bellingshausen, a Baltic German seafarer and officer born on Saaremaa. As part of the Russian Antarctic expedition, he was among the first people to see the continent and recorded what the voyage revealed. The anniversary therefore celebrates both a defining moment in maritime history and the scientific work that followed it. Eesti Pank also connects the achievement with later advances in polar research, geophysics and navigation. On the coin, Bellingshausen’s vessel Vostok crosses the central field, transforming the expedition ship into a visual emblem of exploration and discovery. The image honours Antarctic explorers and researchers while acknowledging Estonia’s seafaring heritage. The design was created by Tiiu Pirsko and Mati Veermets.
