2 Euro Commemorative Coin Germany 2020 Federal State of Brandenburg, Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam (Bundesländer I) Issued in 2020, this German €2 commemorative coin continues the Federal States series with Brandenburg. Its national design presents Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam, one of the most recognizable monuments of Prussian cultural history. Frederick the Great created the summer residence as a private retreat; the name “Sanssouci,” meaning “without a care,” expresses the king’s guiding ideal for the site. The vineyard terraces and elegant palace architecture give the ensemble its distinctive character. The coin also points to the wider international importance of Potsdam’s palaces and gardens, which have formed part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1990. Jordi Truxa designed the composition.
