2 Euro Commemorative Coin Estonia 2020 100th Anniversary of the Tartu Peace Treaty Estonia’s 2020 commemorative coin marks the Treaty of Tartu, signed on 2 February 1920 by the Republic of Estonia and Soviet Russia. The agreement brought the Estonian War of Independence to an end, established Estonia’s eastern frontier and secured Soviet Russia’s recognition of Estonian independence. Its renunciation of all claims to the Estonian people and territory gave the new republic an important foundation for sovereign statehood. The coin presents this historical turning point through an image rich in suggestion: a tree spreads its branches across the design, with the words “TARTU RAHU” partly hidden by the limbs and woven into the composition. The growing tree evokes endurance and a state taking root, while the integrated lettering keeps the peace settlement at the heart of the image. “EESTI” and “2 February 2020” identify the issue and its commemorative date. The design was created by Ivar Sakk, a graphic designer, design historian and professor at the Estonian Academy of Arts.
