2 Euro Commemorative Coin San Marino 2020 500th Anniversary of the death of Raffaello Sanzio San Marino’s 2020 commemorative issue marks five centuries since the death of Raffaello Santi, better known as Raphael, one of the defining artists of the Italian Renaissance. Raphael died in Rome on 6 April 1520, aged only 37, and the coin recalls a career whose brevity did not diminish its importance for the cultural history of the High Renaissance. The design features the profile of the Virgin Mary taken from the “Madonna di Casa Santi,” an early work associated with Raphael’s family home in Urbino. The dates 1520 and 2020 make the anniversary immediately recognizable, while the inscription “RAFFAELLO” identifies the artist being commemorated. Together, these elements connect a youthful artistic image with the lasting memory of Raphael’s achievement.
