2 Euro Commemorative Coin Luxembourg 2007 50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome The coin commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome signed on 25 March 1957 by Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. The two agreements — establishing the European Economic Community (EEC) and the Euratom Treaty — came into force on 1 January 1958; the EEC aimed to create a common market and foster closer economic cooperation. The design reproduces the treaty text with the six signatures against a background evoking Michelangelo's pavement of Piazza del Campidoglio, the site of signing. The Luxembourg issue bears the inscriptions "EUROPE", "TRAITÉ DE ROME, 50 ANS" and "LËTZEBUERG"; a hologram alternately complements the scene or reveals Grand Duke Henri's portrait. Designer: H.
