2 Euro Commemorative Coin San Marino 2020 250th Anniversary of the death of Giambattista Tiepolo San Marino’s 2020 commemorative issue marks 250 years since the death of Giambattista Tiepolo, born in 1696 and deceased in 1770. A leading Venetian painter of the eighteenth century, Tiepolo achieved lasting recognition through monumental frescoes and an imaginative visual language charged with theatrical effect. His work represents one of the major achievements of European painting in that period. The coin features, on its left side, the bust of an angel taken from Tiepolo’s painting “Angel Succouring Hagar.” The original is preserved at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice. By placing the dates 1770 and 2020 on the design, the issue clearly links the artist’s death with the year of commemoration.
