2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2020 100th Anniversary of the union of Thrace with Greece Issued in 2020, Greece’s 2-euro commemorative coin marks the centenary of Thrace’s union with Greece. The anniversary chiefly concerns Western Thrace, which after the First World War was removed from the Bulgarian and Ottoman imperial frameworks and placed under Greek administration in 1920. Greek troops entered the region in May, while the Treaty of Sèvres, signed on 10 August 1920, endorsed the post-war settlement that assigned Western Thrace to Greece. The transfer incorporated this Aegean borderland into the Greek state, although the wider region of Thrace remained divided among several countries. The coin also evokes the area’s ancient heritage by reproducing the griffin from a coin of Abdera, a prominent Thracian city.
