2 Euro Commemorative Coin Germany 2020 50th Anniversary of Willy Brandt's Kniefall von Warschau Issued in 2020, this German €2 commemorative coin recalls Willy Brandt’s genuflection in Warsaw on 7 December 1970. In front of the monument commemorating the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, the Federal Chancellor made a striking gesture of humility and accepted responsibility, on behalf of Germany, for the crimes of National Socialism. Although controversial in Germany at first, the gesture became an internationally recognized symbol of remembrance, dialogue, and reconciliation with Poland and Germany’s eastern neighbours. Designed by Bodo Broschat, the national side combines Brandt’s kneeling figure with the memorial, a seven-branched menorah, and references to the uprising’s victims.
