Issued by Vatican City on 16 October 2020, the coin marked five centuries since the artist’s death. Its design brings together two recognizable details from Raphael’s work. The principal image presents his self-portrait as the figure positioned at the edge of The School of Athens, the celebrated fresco in the Vatican Museums. Beside it appear the two winged angels associated with the Sistine Madonna. Raphael’s name, the dates 1520 and 2020, and the name of Vatican City frame the subject clearly. The composition therefore links his Roman artistic career with his lasting place in European cultural history.
