2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2020 150th Anniversary of the birth of Maria Montessori Italy’s 2020 two-euro commemorative coin marks the 150th anniversary of Maria Montessori’s birth in 1870 in Chiaravalle. Montessori was among Italy’s earliest women to earn a university medical degree, yet her career increasingly joined medical observation with educational reform. Through work with children experiencing developmental and learning difficulties, she developed teaching materials and carefully prepared environments intended to encourage independence, sensory exploration, concentration, and each child’s individual growth. In 1907 she opened the first Casa dei Bambini in Rome, and her educational approach soon spread beyond Italy. The coin presents Montessori’s portrait within a geometric composition, surrounded by educational elements associated with her system. The date 1870 identifies her birth year, while “RI” denotes the Italian Republic and “R” the Rome mint.
