2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2004 50th Anniversary of the World Food Programme Italy’s 2004 commemorative 2-euro coin honors the World Food Programme on the occasion of its fifth decade of activity. WFP was established in 1961 by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly as a joint initiative of the United Nations and the Food and Agriculture Organization. Its historical mission has combined emergency food assistance with efforts that help communities withstand future shocks. Issued on 14 December 2004, the coin expresses that purpose through a compact symbolic design. A globe occupies the center, accompanied by the programme’s English name and three essential crops rising from it: wheat, maize, and rice. The twelve five-pointed stars around the outer ring place this humanitarian commemoration within the wider European context.
