Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the Federal Republic of Germany established the European Economic Community, seeking to create a common market that would deepen economic ties and encourage growth. At the same time, a separate treaty founded the European Atomic Energy Community, known as Euratom. Slovenia, which had joined the euro area in January 2007, took part in the anniversary issue with the other euro-area countries.
