2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2021 150th Anniversary of Rome as the Capital of Italy This Italian €2 commemorative coin, issued in 2021, marks the 150th anniversary of Rome becoming the capital of Italy. After Italian forces entered Rome in September 1870, the new Kingdom formally transferred its capital from Florence to Rome in February 1871. The decision completed a central symbolic stage of national unification and placed the country’s political institutions in a city whose ancient and Christian heritage had long shaped European history. The design presents a detail of the goddess Roma, taken from Angelo Zanelli’s sculpture at the Altare della Patria, Rome’s monumental national memorial. The inscription “ROMA CAPITALE” and the dates 1871–2021 identify the anniversary, while twelve stars symbolize the European Union.
