2 Euro Commemorative Coin San Marino 2021 450th Anniversary of the birth of Caravaggio San Marino’s 2021 issue marks the 450th anniversary of the birth of Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio. Born in 1571 and deceased in 1610, the Italian painter exerted a lasting influence on European art and played a particularly important role in the emergence of Baroque painting. The commemorative coin therefore honours an artist whose work became a major reference point in the history of European art. The design is based on Caravaggio’s painting “Penitent Magdalene,” held in the collection of the Galleria Doria Pamphilj in Rome. Its inclusion connects the coin directly with one of the gallery’s Caravaggio works. Scheduled for 30 March 2021, the issue forms part of a series presenting three paintings by the artist from that collection.
