2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2021 200th Anniversary of the Greek Revolution Issued in 2021, Greece’s commemorative €2 coin marks the bicentenary of the 1821 Revolution, the Greek uprising against Ottoman rule. The movement began in February 1821 when Alexandros Ypsilantis entered the Danubian principalities; soon afterward, revolts spread through the Peloponnese, mainland Greece, and several islands. In January 1822, the insurgents proclaimed Greek independence. The cause ultimately prevailed with decisive European intervention, especially the naval victory of Britain, France, and Russia over the Egyptian-Ottoman fleet at Navarino in 1827. The London Protocol of 1830 established Greece as an independent state, while the Ottoman Empire formally recognized the new kingdom in 1832.
