Its national design features Magdeburg Cathedral, a landmark of the state capital and a site of major European historical importance. The monument traces its origins to the church of St. Maurice, founded by Otto I in 937; Magdeburg became an archbishopric in 968. A city fire severely damaged the Ottonian cathedral in 1207, leading to the construction of the Gothic successor. That medieval building still defines Magdeburg’s skyline and identity.
