2 Euro Commemorative Coin Estonia 2021 Finno-Ugric Peoples Estonia’s 2021 commemorative coin celebrates the linguistic and cultural kinship of the Finno-Ugric peoples. Among the independent states associated with this family are Estonia, Finland and Hungary, while many other Finno-Ugric communities live in Russia. The design draws on Neolithic rock art found beside Lake Onega, known in Estonian as Äänisjärv, and dated by UNESCO to roughly 4500–3500 BC. Its compact imagery brings together a sun, an elk, a hunter and a water bird. Rather than presenting a literal scene, these elements suggest a symbolic cycle of life and recall motifs that have remained present in Finno-Ugric art and folklore. The inscriptions “FENNO-UGRIA”, “EESTI” and “2021” identify both the cultural theme and its Estonian setting. Al Paldrok and Madis Põldsaar created the design, based on signs Paldrok had recorded during a scientific expedition in 1984.
