2 Euro Commemorative Coin Malta 2021 Heroes of the Pandemic Heroes of the Pandemic – Malta’s 2021 €2 commemorative coin honours the healthcare sector’s service during the COVID-19 pandemic, with particular attention to medical professionals working on the front line. The Central Bank of Malta issued it on 2 August 2021 in an initiative carried out with the health ministry. Its central image is an iconic photograph of nurses Doreen Zammit and Charmaine Cauchi, taken by Diane Faenza, herself a nurse at Mater Dei Hospital. Designed and engraved by Maria Anna Frisone, the coin depicts two healthcare workers rising to face the unknown, framed by the inscriptions “HEROES OF THE PANDEMIC” and “MALTA – 2021”.
