2 Euro Commemorative Coin Slovenia 2021 200th Anniversary of the Provincial Museum for Carniola Slovenia 2-euro commemorative coin 2021 200th anniversary of the National Museum of Slovenia The institution commemorated by this coin traces its beginnings to a resolution adopted by the Carniolan Provincial Estates on 15 October 1821 to establish a provincial museum. The Carniolan Agricultural Society initially assumed responsibility, while Emperor Francis I approved the foundation in 1826 and designated it the Provincial Museum. As the first museum in the Slovenian lands, it marked the beginning of Slovenia’s museum tradition. Contributions from donors across the country built a broad collection, ranging from archaeology and natural history to historical, artistic and archival material. Over two centuries, the original institution developed into several museums, including today’s National Museum of Slovenia.
