2 Euro Commemorative Coin Malta 2021 Malta's Prehistoric Monuments - UNESCO World Heritage Site Tarxien Temples – Issued in 2021, this €2 commemorative coin honours the prehistoric Tarxien temple complex and forms the sixth of Malta’s seven-coin series dedicated to UNESCO-listed prehistoric sites. The four megalithic structures were built, according to the date shown on the coin, between 3600 and 2500 BC, placing them within Malta’s monumental temple tradition of the fourth and third millennia BC. Their function later changed, and during the Early Bronze Age the site was used partly as a cremation cemetery. The design presents a detail of the complex, accompanied by “3600–2500 BC”, “MALTA”, and the year 2021.
