2 Euro Commemorative Coin Andorra 2021 100th Anniversary of the Coronation of Our Lady of Meritxell Andorra’s 2021 commemorative two-euro coin marks the centenary of the canonical coronation of Our Lady of Meritxell. The ceremony took place on 8 September 1921, after preparations associated with 1914 had been postponed by the First World War and the death of Pope Pius X. Justí Guitart, Bishop of Urgell and Andorra’s episcopal co-prince, resumed the proceedings with Cardinal Francesc Vidal i Barraquer. Worshippers from every Andorran parish attended, while jewelry collected from the population helped fund the crown. Meritxell is regarded as Andorra’s patron saint, so the celebration gave an established religious devotion a strong civic and national dimension. The coin depicts the Romanesque statue, dating from the eleventh or twelfth century, with part of the basilica in the background.
