2 Euro Commemorative Coin Germany 2022 Federal State of Thuringia, Wartburg Castle (Bundesländer I) Issued in 2022, the German commemorative €2 coin “Thuringia – Wartburg Castle” concludes the federal states series, created to present Germany’s federal structure to people across Europe. Its national design depicts Wartburg Castle, one of Europe’s most important hilltop fortresses and a defining landmark of Thuringia. First documented in 1080, the castle links medieval princely history with wider European cultural memory. Martin Luther stayed there in 1521–22 and translated the New Testament into German. Saint Elisabeth and the 1817 Wartburg Festival add further layers of meaning. The coin therefore celebrates a UNESCO World Heritage site associated with language, literature, religion, and democratic aspirations.
