2 Euro Commemorative Coin Estonia 2022 150th anniversary of the Estonian Literature Society Estonia’s 2022 commemorative coin marks 150 years since the founding of the Eesti Kirjameeste Selts, the Society of Estonian Literati. Established in Viljandi in 1872 and later active in Tartu, the association belonged to the country’s national movement and promoted education, Estonian-language culture, and the development of literary life. Its work included refining orthography, preserving folklore, publishing yearbooks and other texts, and encouraging writing in Estonian. Political disagreements eventually brought the society’s activities to an end in 1894, yet its contribution to the formation of an Estonian intellectual culture remained significant. The design expresses this legacy through an open book, a compact image of knowledge made public and shared. Across its pages appears a saying by Jakob Hurt, the society’s first president, linking national limitations with the aspiration to become great in spirit. Riho Luuse created the coin’s design, giving the anniversary a distinctly literary and reflective character.
