2 Euro Commemorative Coin Spain 2022 500th Anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the Earth by Juan Sebastian Elcano The Spanish FNMT issued a 2-euro commemorative coin in 2022 marking the 500th anniversary of the Nao Victoria’s return to Spain, which completed the first circumnavigation of the globe. The expedition, carried out from 1519 to 1522, was begun by Ferdinand Magellan and completed by Juan Sebastián Elcano after Magellan’s death. UNESCO recognizes the voyage as a milestone in human history: its participants were the first to circle the planet, and the journey expanded knowledge of South America’s extent, the vastness of the Pacific and the dimensions of the Earth. The coin’s design places a portrait of Elcano—taken from an image kept at the Museo Naval de Madrid—before a globe; beneath appear 1519 1522, JUAN SEBASTIÁN ELCANO and the Latin PRIMUS CIRCUMDEDISTI ME.
