2 Euro Commemorative Coin Portugal 2022 100th Anniversary of the first crossing of the South Atlantic by plane The Portuguese coin issued on 30 March 2022 commemorates the 100th anniversary of the first South Atlantic crossing. It honours aviators Carlos Viegas Gago Coutinho and Artur de Sacadura Freire Cabral, who in spring 1922 flew from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro in Faire III biplanes over 79 days (62 hours 26 minutes airborne). The reverse shows a Faire III at the centre, inscriptions TRAVESSIA DO ATLANTICO SUL and PORUGAL 1992 - 2022, four stars of the Southern Cross, the designer initials JJ Brito, the ‘Casa de Moeda’ mint mark and the twelve EU stars.
