The United Nations General Assembly adopted the declaration in Paris on 10 December 1948, establishing a shared standard for the rights and freedoms of every person and nation. Its creation was shaped by the atrocities of the Second World War and by the international effort to prevent their recurrence. Issued on 10 December 2008, the coin translates this historical message into a compact visual programme. A woman and a man appear with an olive branch, wheat ear and cogwheel, symbolising peace, nourishment and work. Barbed wire evokes freedom, while linked rings form the number 60. The design also bears “DIRITTI UMANI”, Italy’s RI monogram, the year and twelve European stars.
