2 Euro Commemorative Coin Slovakia 2022 300th Anniversary of the construction of continental Europe's first atmospheric steam engine for draining mines In 1722 an atmospheric steam engine was installed in the mining town of Nová Baňa to drain the workings. It is regarded as the first machine of its kind on continental Europe, making the region’s mining history part of the story of early industrialisation. The English engineer Isaac Potter built the engine. The coin depicts the machine itself and places Potter’s signature beside the years 1722 and 2022. Rather than treating technology as an abstraction, it tells the story through a specific object and place of use.
