2 Euro Commemorative Coin Malta 2022 Malta's Prehistoric Monuments - UNESCO World Heritage Site Ħal-Saflieni Hypogeum – Issued in 2022, this €2 commemorative coin honours the underground UNESCO World Heritage site at Paola. Cut into the rock, the complex was used from about 4000 to 2500 BC during several prehistoric cultural phases. It was probably established first as a sanctuary and later became a necropolis; the site was discovered in 1902. The main design feature is a detail of the prehistoric architecture. It is accompanied by the inscriptions “MALTA,” “2022,” “ĦAL – SAFLIENI HYPOGEUM,” and “4 000 – 2 500 BC.” The initials “NGB” identify the designer, Noel Galea Bason.
