2 Euro Commemorative Coin Spain 2022 35th Anniversary of the Erasmus Program The Spanish 2-euro commemorative coin was issued in 2022 for the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus Programme, launched in 1987 and now one of the European Union’s emblematic exchange initiatives, from which roughly ten million people had benefited by 2021. The common design by Joaquín Jiménez, chosen in a public vote in 2021, appears on the Spanish issue as a portrait of Erasmus of Rotterdam over a woven, radiating band that traverses the field and forms the number 35. The imagery links Erasmus as an intellectual inspirer with an allegory of European scholarly and human exchange; stars emerge from the interlacing of those connections. The Spanish reverse bears 1987–2022, ERASMUS PROGRAMME, ESPAÑA, the mint mark and the initials J.J.
