2 Euro Commemorative Coin Finland 2023 Finland's First Nature Conservation Act The coin marks the origins of Finland’s nature conservation legislation and emphasizes its role as an early state framework for protecting habitats and species diversity. A stylized beetle is central to the design; in the national design competition this insect was chosen to stand for biodiversity because beetles fulfil many ecological functions. The threatened species called “Nahkuri” draws attention to the concrete need to protect vulnerable species under the law. Depicted dead wood represents the habitats on which numerous organisms depend and serves as a metaphor for protected areas. The Helsinki-based designer Sandra Prami created the winning entry titled “Nahkuri”. The coin also carries the Finnish and Swedish words for nature conservation, the letters “FI”, the mint mark and the twelve EU stars.
