Charlemagne was king of the Franks and later Roman emperor, and his reign shaped political and cultural developments across medieval Europe. Designed by Tobias Winnen, the national side merges Charlemagne’s personal monogram with the octagonal core of Aachen Cathedral, linking the historical figure to the architectural center of his imperial memory. The inscription, dates of life, year of issue, national mark, mint mark, and artist’s initials complete the composition. The coin remains legal tender throughout the euro area.
