2 Euro Commemorative Coin San Marino 2023 500th Anniversary of the death of Pietro Perugino San Marino’s 2023 commemorative coin marks five centuries since the death of Pietro Vannucci, known as Perugino. Born around 1450, the painter died at Fontignano in 1523 and is remembered as one of the leading figures of the Umbrian Renaissance. The central image presents the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child, taken from a painting that also includes Saint Sebastian and John the Baptist. Perugino’s work, Madonna and Child with Saint Sebastian and Saint John the Baptist, is held by the Uffizi Galleries in Florence. The dates 1523 and 2023 identify the historical anniversary and the year of issue, while the inscription “PERUGINO” states clearly whom the coin commemorates.
