2 Euro Commemorative Coin Estonia 2023 Estonian national bird Estonia dedicated this commemorative issue to the barn swallow, Hirundo rustica, presenting its national bird as both a symbol of identity and a reminder of environmental responsibility. Released on 12 May 2023, just before World Migratory Bird Day, the coin connects national appreciation with awareness of the species’ declining numbers over recent decades. It forms part of an Estonian series celebrating national symbols on circulating coins rather than marking a single historical anniversary. The design gives the subject a lively sense of place: one swallow is shown in flight above Estonia, while two companions rest on a power line. Curving semicircles and diagonal lines suggest motion, air currents, and the bird’s trajectory. The silhouette is accompanied by the arched Latin name “HIRUNDO RUSTICA”, with “EESTI” and “2023” completing the national identification. Kaupo Kangro created the design, framed by the twelve stars of the European flag.
