2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2023 150th Anniversary of the death of Alessandro Manzoni Italy’s 2023 commemorative 2-euro coin marks the 150th anniversary of Alessandro Manzoni’s death in Milan on 22 May 1873. Manzoni was one of the defining literary figures of nineteenth-century Italy. His novel I promessi sposi, known in English as The Betrothed, acquired strong patriotic resonance during the Risorgimento and helped establish a modern Italian literary language accessible to a broad readership. For that reason, his legacy belongs not only to literature but also to the cultural history of Italy’s linguistic and national consolidation. The coin presents a half-profile portrait of Manzoni on its central field. Its design is based on the writer’s image used on Italy’s 100,000-lire banknote in 1967, while his name, the mint mark R, the initials RI, and the dates 1873–2023 complete the commemorative composition.
