2 Euro Commemorative Coin San Marino 2004 100th Anniversary of the Celebrations in Honor of Bartolomeo Borghesi San Marino’s 2004 commemorative issue honours Bartolomeo Borghesi, a distinguished historian and numismatist. Born in Savignano di Romagna on 11 July 1781, he devoted much of his scholarly work to epigraphy and the study of coins. His investigations significantly shaped the academic understanding of classical antiquity and influenced later historians, including Theodor Mommsen. Borghesi died in San Marino in 1860, giving the subject a particularly direct connection with the issuing republic. His bust occupies the central place on the coin’s design. His name appears beside the portrait, together with the reference to San Marino, while 2004 is placed below. The composition presents both the scholar’s intellectual legacy and his lasting association with San Marino in a restrained commemorative portrait.
