2 Euro Commemorative Coin Malta 2023 The Arrival of the French in Malta in 1798 Napoleon Bonaparte and the French in Malta: This €2 commemorative coin was issued in 2023 to mark the 225th anniversary of the French arrival in Malta in 1798. In June of that year, Napoleon ended the rule of the Order of St John and established a republican government during his brief stay. The new administration abolished slavery and aristocratic privileges, introduced a secular state, and closed the Inquisition tribunal. These sweeping reforms were not universally accepted by the Maltese population and soon contributed to an uprising. The coin’s design presents a personification of the French Republic modelled on contemporary official letterheads, with liberty-themed inscriptions and the dates 1798–2023.
