Born Maria Kalogeropoulou in New York in 1923, she received the formative part of her musical education in Athens and joined the Greek National Opera during the Second World War. Her international breakthrough came in Verona in 1947, followed by celebrated appearances at La Scala, Covent Garden and the Metropolitan Opera. Callas combined exceptional vocal technique with powerful dramatic interpretation, helping restore neglected bel canto works and demanding new theatrical standards. Her portrait thus commemorates a Greek-connected artist of lasting global importance.
