2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2023 150th Anniversary of the birth of Constantin Caratheodory Greece’s 2023 €2 commemorative coin marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Constantin Carathéodory, born in Berlin in 1873 and deceased in Munich in 1950. A mathematician of Greek origin, he helped shape modern analysis through influential work on the calculus of variations, real functions, measure theory, and conformal mapping. Trained first as an engineer, he turned to mathematics in Berlin in 1900 and earned his doctorate at Göttingen in 1904 under Hermann Minkowski. His academic career included several German universities. In 1920, at the request of the Greek government, he organized the planned University of Smyrna; when the project collapsed amid the events of 1922, he rescued its library holdings. He later taught in Athens and Munich, linking Greek academic aspirations with international mathematical research.
