A leading Slovenian mathematician, he made important contributions to the theory of analytic functions, integral equations and potential theory, while also pursuing astronomy. When the University of Ljubljana was established in 1919, Plemelj became its first rector, helping establish advanced mathematical and scientific education in Slovenia. The commemorative issue therefore marks more than a birth anniversary: it recognizes a scholar whose research, teaching and institutional leadership helped shape the country’s modern scientific tradition.
