2 Euro Commemorative Coin Germany 2009 Federal State of Saarland, Ludwigskirche in Saarbrücken (Bundesländer I) Issued in 2009, Germany’s commemorative €2 coin presents Saarland through one of Saarbrücken’s defining landmarks, the Ludwigskirche. The Baroque church is the centerpiece of Friedrich Joachim Stengel’s Place-Royale urban ensemble and therefore represents the ceremonial town planning of historic Saarbrücken. The coin depicts the building from its recognizable eastern aspect, including the tip of the bell tower. Friedrich Brenner’s design also conveys the church’s distinctive broad hall, separate transept, balustrade, clock, and floating angels. By concentrating on these architectural features, the image turns a regional monument into a concise symbol of Saarland’s cultural history and Baroque heritage.
