2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2024 50th Anniversary of the Restoration of Democracy in Greece Issued in 2024, Greece’s commemorative €2 coin marks the 50th anniversary of the restoration of democracy. On 23 July 1974, the military junta collapsed after seven years of authoritarian rule, following the severe political and military crisis surrounding Cyprus. Konstantinos Karamanlis returned from exile in France the next day and formed a civilian government. The ensuing Metapolitefsi, or political transition, brought parliamentary elections in November and a December referendum that rejected the restoration of the monarchy. These measures inaugurated the Third Hellenic Republic, while the legalization of previously banned political forces and the withdrawal of the armed forces from political life helped establish a durable parliamentary order.
